Grizzly bear attack in Canada: one dead and eleven injured

A grizzly bear attack in Canada during a school trip leaves one dead and 11 injured

A grizzly bear attack in Canada has shocked the community of Bella Coola, in the west of the country, where a bear attacked a group of students and teachers on a field trip, killing one person and injuring eleven others. The incident, which took place in an outdoor area managed by the Nuxalk Nation, has put local authorities on alert while the animal is still on the run.

Authorities mobilised after grizzly bear attack in Canada

The chief of the Nuxalk Nation, Samuel Schooner, described the incident as devastating for the individuals and families involved, emphasising that all those injured are receiving medical assistance. The indigenous community immediately called in the police and forest rangers to track down the grizzly bear, which witnesses described as particularly aggressive.

Teachers on the front line to protect students

During the grizzly bear attack in Canada, some teachers used pepper spray in an attempt to protect the children. Among the most seriously injured is a teacher who was rushed to hospital, while other students and teachers suffered injuries of varying degrees. The attack involved the Acwsalcta School, run by the Nuxalk First Nation, and is the sixth such incident recorded in Canada since the beginning of the year.

A problem that goes beyond Canada

Brian Twaites, spokesman for the emergency services, reported that two people are in critical condition, two others have suffered serious injuries and the rest were treated at the scene. The grizzly bear attack in Canada is part of a broader picture of conflicts between humans and wildlife: in Japan, especially in the north of the archipelago, at least 12 people have died since last April in close encounters with bears, which are increasingly present in inhabited areas.
