ABC halts his show after comments about Charlie Kirk’s killer. Colleagues and unions speak of censorship
New York – ABC’s indefinite suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has sparked a wave of reactions in the American entertainment world. The decision came after the host described the “Maga gang’s” attempt to distance themselves from the man who killed Charlie Kirk as “desperate”.
Sarah Silverman spoke of “a voice that always told the truth, even when it hurt”. Stephen Colbert warned that ‘firing Jimmy sends a message to all of us,’ while Seth Meyers called him ‘the Tom Brady of late night.’
Director Judd Apatow denounced ‘disguised censorship’ and actor Mark Ruffalo reminded us that ‘satire is part of democracy.’ The Writers Guild of America, the screenwriters’ union, called it ‘an ominous sign for creative freedom.’
The hashtag #BringBackKimmel exploded on social media, while conservatives have long criticised the host for his ‘militancy masquerading as comedy.’ Kimmel has not yet made an official comment, but according to rumours, he is considering an independent project in the future.
