The US president believes that the next step towards peace is a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Zelensky without the involvement of the White House
The White House strategy – Donald Trump intends to leave Russia and Ukraine responsible for organising a direct meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky. According to administration sources cited by The Guardian, the American president considers a bilateral summit to be the “next step” on the path to a ceasefire, before a possible summit with the participation of the United States.
Election promises and caution – During the election campaign, Trump promised that he would end the conflict “in 24 hours”. Now, however, according to his advisers, he would prefer not to expose himself directly until a preliminary meeting between the two leaders has taken place. The possibility of a trilateral summit, with the White House at the table, would therefore remain dependent on the outcome of a Putin-Zelensky meeting, the realisation of which still appears uncertain.
Trump’s words – In a radio interview with WABC, the president explained: ‘I prefer that Putin and Zelensky meet without me, at least at the beginning. I just want to see what happens.’ This approach marks a wait-and-see stance, with Washington ready to re-enter the negotiations only at a later stage.
