Trump holds videoconference with EU and Zelensky ahead of face-to-face meeting with Putin

The US president attacks “fake news” and assures with his usual arrogance: “We are winning on everything”. Moscow reiterates “maximalist” conditions for ending the war

Donald Trump announced that he will be in contact today, Tuesday, with European leaders, the heads of the European Union and NATO, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The videoconference, described by the US president as a meeting with “extraordinary people who want to see a deal closed”, represents a sort of virtual pre-summit ahead of Friday’s face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

On social media, Trump harshly attacked the American media, accusing them of biased coverage of the meeting with the Russian leader and citing as an example the statements of former National Security Advisor John Bolton, whom he called a ‘fired loser.’ ‘We are winning on everything,’ he wrote, ‘the Fake News is working overtime. If I got Moscow and Leningrad for free as part of the deal with Russia, they would still say it was a bad deal.’

For its part, Moscow has made it known through the voice of Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Fadeev that the Russian position ‘remains unchanged’ from that expressed by Putin on 14 June 2024: complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from regions considered strategic and renunciation of NATO membership. These conditions are considered ‘maximalist’ and unacceptable by Kiev and its Western partners.

On the ground, Russian forces claim to have conquered two new towns in Donetsk, Nikanorovka and Suvorovo. Local Ukrainian authorities have ordered the evacuation of families with children from areas considered at risk.
