Negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza are once again at a standstill. Hamas denies any willingness to lay down its arms
Hamas has reiterated that it will not accept disarmament until a sovereign Palestinian state is established. The statement comes in response to one of Israel’s main demands in the ceasefire talks in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by the BBC, citing sources from the Palestinian armed group.
According to Hamas, reports that it has expressed a willingness to lay down its arms are unfounded and the result of a misinterpretation of the words attributed to Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s envoy to the Middle East. Witkoff reportedly said that Hamas was ready to consider disarmament, a statement that immediately prompted a reaction from the group.
Israel considers the end of Hamas’ military arsenal a prerequisite for any agreement that could lead to an end to hostilities and the release of hostages still held in Gaza. However, indirect negotiations between the parties — mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States — stalled again last week.
The issue of disarmament therefore remains one of the main obstacles to reaching a lasting agreement in a conflict that has been causing casualties and destruction on both sides for months.
