Vibrio vulnificus, responsible for serious necrotising skin infections, is spreading due to climate change, with increasing risks also through the consumption of shellfish

There is a health emergency in Florida: in 2025 alone, Vibrio vulnificus, known as the “flesh-eating bacterium”, has caused the deaths of four people. This was reported on social media by Italian infectious disease specialist Matteo Bassetti, head physician at the San Martino Polyclinic in Genoa.

This bacterium causes very serious skin infections, as it enters the body through wounds on the skin, triggering necrotising conditions that in some cases require amputation. In the most extreme cases, however, even amputation is not enough to save the patient’s life.

The spread of Vibrio vulnificus is linked to climate change: hurricanes and storms have facilitated the spread of this germ in brackish waters, from where it can enter the human body through exposed wounds on the feet, legs or arms.

In addition to direct contact with contaminated water, the bacterium can also be transmitted through the consumption of shellfish, such as oysters. In most cases, it causes mild gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhoea and vomiting, but in some people it can cause very serious and fatal infections. The increase in cases and the danger of these infections are a clear effect of the climate change currently underway.
