After pressure from the American president, the company seems ready to say goodbye to corn syrup
Coca-Cola seems to have accepted President Donald Trump’s proposal: the famous fizzy drink could soon change its recipe in the United States, replacing high-fructose corn syrup with cane sugar.
‘I started talking to the company about using REAL cane sugar in Coca-Cola in the US, and they agreed to replace it,’ Trump wrote on the Truth platform, calling it ‘a very positive step.’ A long-time consumer of Diet Coke, the president thanked the company’s top management for the decision: ‘You’ll see. It will only be better.’
In a statement, Coca-Cola did not explicitly confirm the change in the recipe, but thanked Trump for his enthusiasm for the brand, announcing that ‘new details about the innovative offerings in the range’ would soon be revealed.
Cane sugar is already used in Coca-Cola distributed in countries such as Canada and Mexico (known as ‘MexiCoke’), while corn syrup, introduced in 1980 for economic reasons, remains prevalent in the US. Health Secretary Robert Kennedy recently criticised the use of this ingredient, linking it to the obesity epidemic in the country.
