Acquitted of the most serious charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy. He faces up to 10 years in prison

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been found guilty of prostitution-related offences but acquitted of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy. The verdict was handed down by a federal jury in New York at the end of a seven-week trial.

The 55-year-old rapper and music producer was charged with five counts, including racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation for prostitution. The jury found him not guilty of the first two charges but guilty of the prostitution-related offences.

Combs, who has always denied all charges, was present in court during the reading of the verdict, along with his mother and sister. He now faces up to 10 years in prison, while a conviction on the most serious charges could have resulted in life imprisonment.

During the trial, the 12 jurors heard 34 witnesses and analysed thousands of documents, including text messages and audio recordings. At the heart of the case were the testimonies of several ex-girlfriends, including singer Cassie, who was in a relationship with Combs from 2007 to 2018, and a woman identified by the pseudonym “Jane”.

According to the testimonies, Combs forced several partners to have sex with other men while he watched, masturbated or filmed the scenes. Some testimonies spoke of actual “sex marathons”, defined as “freak-offs”, which were allegedly organised by a network directly controlled by the artist.

The defence denied all responsibility and challenged the credibility of the witnesses, referring to “fantastical reconstructions”. However, the jury deemed the evidence gathered sufficient for a partial conviction.

The final conviction and sentence will be announced in the coming weeks.
