Washington discourages participation in summit on recognition of Palestinian state: ‘Consequences for those who act against Israel’
The administration of US President Donald Trump has sent a clear diplomatic signal ahead of next week’s UN conference in New York on the possible creation of a Palestinian state. In a cable sent yesterday to the governments of various countries, Washington expressed its opposition to participation in the event, calling it a threat to American and Israeli interests.
The message states that states that take “anti-Israel actions” after the conference will be considered to be in conflict with US foreign policy and could face diplomatic consequences. The United States also reiterated its opposition to any unilateral attempt to officially recognise a Palestinian state.
The State Department has not issued any official statements, while international tension is growing around the initiative, co-organised by France and Saudi Arabia. French President Emmanuel Macron announced last week his intention to steer the conference towards concrete measures for the recognition of Palestine, reinforcing Paris’s support for the “two-state” solution.
The Trump administration’s position, in line with its traditional support for Israel, represents a further obstacle to the multilateral efforts of the United Nations and Arab countries to revive the peace process in the Middle East.
