Political crisis in the Netherlands: Geert Wilders’ PVV leaves the governing coalition

The leader of the Dutch far right withdraws his party due to disagreement over migration policy, paving the way for possible early elections in Europe’s fifth largest economy.

Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), has announced his party’s withdrawal from the governing coalition in the Netherlands, triggering a political crisis that could lead to early elections. The decision is based on strong disagreement with allies over migration policies, a central theme of the PVV’s programme.

Wilders stated on X that he never signed the asylum plan and expressed dissatisfaction with the delays in implementing what he called the “strictest immigration policy ever seen in the Netherlands”, promised after the PVV’s electoral success in November 2023.

The PVV’s exit from the coalition opens a phase of political uncertainty in the country, the fifth largest economy in the European Union, with possible repercussions both domestically and across Europe.
