Washington slams brakes on aid to Kiev and use of the term ‘illegal’ for Russian invasion: tensions in finance ministers’ draft in Canada
The US administration, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, is obstructing the inclusion of references to ‘further support’ for Ukraine in the G7 finance ministers’ joint statement, currently under discussion in Canada. Politico reports this, citing two officials involved in the negotiations.
In addition to reticence about economic and political engagement with Kiev, Washington is also reported to have expressed reluctance to qualify the large-scale Russian invasion as ‘illegal’, preferring more nuanced and less directly accusatory tones towards the Kremlin.
A position that, according to various diplomatic sources, marks a new turning point in American foreign policy, which is increasingly oriented towards an accommodating line towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. The US attitude is generating growing tensions among the G7 countries, which are instead aiming for sharper language and more incisive measures to continue supporting Ukraine in the ongoing war.
Washington’s change of pace also appears increasingly evident to international observers, fuelling the debate on a possible weakening of the Western front in the response to the war unleashed by Moscow.
