Pope Francis’ funeral: Zelensky in black suit, Trump ignores dress code
The Ukrainian president forgoes camouflage for a suit by Viktor Anisimov. Trump shows up in blue, amid criticism
Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump met today in St Peter’s Basilica, on the occasion of Pope Francis’ funeral. A light conversation between the two presidents before taking their places among the international leaders who had come to Rome for the funeral.
For the occasion, Zelensky abandoned the usual military attire adopted since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, choosing a black suit with a sober and elegant style. The suit, made by Ukrainian brand Viktor Anisimov, was described as ‘a very good sign’ by Oleksandr Sokolovsky, president of the Pan-Ukrainian Association of Light Industry Employers.
Against a backdrop dominated by black suits as required by protocol, Donald Trump’s outfit, who opted for a blue suit and matching tie, in contrast to the international dress code observed by the other heads of state, came as a surprise. A detail that recalls the tension of 28 February at the White House, when Zelensky, dressed in military style, was ironically greeted by Trump and criticised for his choice of attire. Today, at St Peter’s, the roles seem to have been reversed.
