Strong impact of climate change, with lightning strikes continuing to claim lives between India and Nepal
This week, at least 75 people lost their lives due to exceptionally intense thunderstorms in the eastern Indian state of Bihar and neighboring Nepal. Local authorities confirmed the death toll, with 65 killed in Bihar between Thursday and Friday and 10 in Nepal due to lightning strikes Wednesday and Thursday.
Weather forecasts indicate that heavy rains will hit Bihar again today, exacerbating an already critical situation. Experts warned last year how climate change is contributing to a worrying increase in lightning strikes in India, which cause more than 1,900 deaths a year in the world’s most populous country.
According to researchers at Fakir Mohan University, lightning strikes caused more than 101,000 deaths between 1967 and 2020, with a surge between 2010 and 2020.
