The provisional death toll in the roof collapse of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in the early hours of Tuesday has risen to 218. The dead include an Italian citizen and a person with dual Italian and Dominican citizenship, as confirmed to Adnkronos by qualified sources.
One of the victims is Italian chef Luca Massimo Iemolo, remembered with deep sorrow by the ‘Sarah Restaurant’ in Santo Domingo where he worked. In a message posted on Instagram, the restaurant’s staff expressed sorrow for the tragedy and paid tribute to the figure of the chef, described as a passionate, generous and respected professional: ‘His love for flavours and his way of working as a team have left a mark that we will not forget’.
The collapse occurred while the restaurant was full of customers. Rescue operations are still ongoing and the authorities are investigating the cause of the disaster. According to the director of the Emergency Operations Centre (Coe), Juan Manuel Mendez, 189 people have been rescued so far.
The Dominican Republic is in shock at one of the worst tragedies in recent years. Investigations will now have to clarify whether there was structural negligence or management responsibility behind the collapse.
