The US president criticises the South African government, accusing it of land expropriation and genocide against whites. His statements raise controversy

Donald Trump has launched new accusations against the South African government, threatening to defect from the upcoming G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for November in South Africa. The US president reiterated his previous statements on the expropriation of white people’s land in South Africa, calling the situation a ‘genocide’. His statements, made through his Truth Social account, continue to stir controversy internationally.

Trump’s accusations about the South African government

‘How can you expect us to go to the G20 meeting in South Africa when land expropriation and genocide are the main themes? They are taking the lands of white farmers and killing them and their families,’ Trump wrote. The president took a clear stance against the situation in South Africa, adding that, in his view, a meeting there would be ‘unthinkable’.

Already in the past, Trump had spoken of ‘large-scale killings’ of white South African farmers, echoing similar accusations of ‘genocide’ made by Elon Musk, his advisor and well-known South African businessman. However, these claims have been widely disputed. Recently, a South African court described such allegations as ‘not real’ and ‘clearly imaginary’.

Trump’s stance on racial discrimination and apartheid

In his post, Trump accused the media of ignoring these reports and failing to adequately report the situation in South Africa. He then recalled how, during his administration, the US suspended all aid to South Africa because of its policies of ‘unfair racial discrimination’ against Afrikaners, the descendants of Dutch settlers. The latter had established the segregationist apartheid regime, which, until 1994, deprived black South Africans of basic rights and imposed a series of discriminatory policies.

With his statements, Trump raises a complex issue concerning South Africa’s recent history, but also its current issues related to the rights of the white population.
