The Canadian Conservative leader reacts to a Trump post on Truth Social, in which the US president relaunched the idea of making Canada the 51st US state

The leader of the Canadian Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, called on US President Donald Trump to “not meddle in the elections” in Canada, following a post Trump published on Truth Social. In his message, Trump had revived the provocative proposal to turn Canada into the 51st state of the United States, prompting a swift reaction from Canadian politicians.

Poilievre, who is trying to consolidate domestic support ahead of the upcoming elections, emphasised that Canada’s political independence must remain outside any external interference. Trump’s statement ignited the debate on the relationship between the two countries, but Poilievre made it clear that Canada’s autonomy is non-negotiable, reiterating that domestic decisions must be made exclusively by Canadian citizens.
