Von der Leyen: ‘Europe ready for rearmament, 800 billion mobilised for defence’
‘Rearm Europe’ plan envisages EUR 800 billion investment to strengthen European defence
Europe is preparing for a ‘massive rearmament’, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presenting the ‘Rearm Europe’ plan in Brussels. Ahead of Thursday’s extraordinary summit, Von der Leyen emphasised that Europe is prepared to do what is necessary to defend itself, with a plan that includes extraordinary defence investments to respond to global threats.
The plan calls for concrete measures, including the activation of the national safeguard clause to allow member states to significantly increase defence spending, and the introduction of a new instrument providing EUR 150 billion in loans for member states for strategic investments.
