Trump National Day: the decline of US politics between absurdity and idolatry

They compared Trump to George Washington… Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney’s shock proposal triggers controversy: Trump should have a national holiday in his honour and it should be on 14 June, his birthday, which is also National Flag Day

The line between politics and idolatry seems to be increasingly blurred in the United States, where pro-Trump fanaticism continues to exceed all limits. The latest example of this drift comes from New York Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who has introduced a bill to turn 14 June, Donald Trump’s birthday, into a bank holiday. According to Newsweek, Tenney wants to add this date to the official bank holidays calendar, placing it alongside historical celebrations such as the one for George Washington.

The initiative, launched on 14 February, aims to amend Title 5 of the US Code and make Trump’s birthday a national holiday, coinciding with National Flag Day on 14 June. According to the congresswoman, Trump is ‘the most decisive president of our modern era’ and deserves this honour for his alleged achievements, including his leadership in international crises and his domestic policies.

In the press release accompanying the proposal, Tenney did not spare lavish praise for the president, calling him ‘the founder of America’s Golden Age’. According to the congresswoman, Trump’s impact on the nation would be comparable to that of George Washington, and America, in the run-up to the 250th anniversary of the 1st US president, should recognise and celebrate the New York tycoon with a new bank holidays, honouring his legacy and the values represented by the American flag.

While the debate on the legitimacy and folly of such a proposal rages on, many observers see this initiative as yet another sign of a dangerous political drift, where the cult of personality is slowly replacing common sense and respect for democratic institutions.
