Trump and Netanyahu to confront each other over Gaza, Hamas: ‘Start negotiations in Doha’
The meeting at the White House while the second phase of the ceasefire agreement is being discussed in Qatar
The US President, Donald Trump, and the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will discuss at the White House the maintenance of the ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, with the common goal of obtaining the release of the 79 hostages still held in Gaza. This was reported by a senior Trump administration official during a press briefing.
The US president is reportedly determined to prevent Hamas from remaining in power, working towards a solution that can end the war and promote regional normalisation. However, he has not taken a clear position on the two-state solution, an issue he had addressed in his 2020 peace plan but has avoided commenting on since being re-elected.
Meanwhile, in Doha Hamas announced the start of talks on the second phase of the hostage and ceasefire agreement. According to the Palestinian group, Israel is ‘delaying the implementation’ of the humanitarian aid agreements.
Israel has confirmed that it will send a delegation to Qatar in the coming days for the negotiations. The second phase of the agreement should, in theory, end the war and ensure the release of all remaining hostages.
