Somalia, US attacks in Puntland: Isis leaders killed
Regional government confirms ‘significant progress’ against jihadist group
Air strikes ordered by President Donald Trump in the mountainous region of Puntland, Somalia, have targeted key Islamic State figures, according to local government reports.
‘The recent airstrikes resulted in the neutralisation of key figures within Isis, marking significant progress as we advance into the second phase of our operation,’ the Puntland regional government said, without specifying the identities of the militants killed.
The operation represents a new development in the fight against jihadist groups active in Somalia, where al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab militias operate in addition to Isis.
