A 23-year-old Syrian sows panic near the Italian-Slovenian border; a bellboy intervenes and stops the assault
A serious episode of violence shocked the centre of Villach, an Austrian town located near the Italian and Slovenian borders, where a 23-year-old man of Syrian origin stabbed five passers-by. Among the victims, a 14-year-old boy lost his life. The attack, which took place near a bridge over the Drava river, involved only men, who were hit by the assailant with ferocity and brutality. The dramatic event was reported by the Austrian portal Heute, confirming the identity and age of the attacker.
The heroic gesture of the bellboy
According to the information provided by the local police, the assault ended thanks to the providential intervention of a deliveryman who, having witnessed the scene from his car, decided to act. With promptness and courage, he ran over the attacker, hitting him and managing to knock him to the ground, thus putting an end to the attack. The intervention was decisive in preventing further casualties and allowing the police to arrive at the scene of the crime.
Police statements and uncertainty about the attack
Local police spokesperson Raine Dionisio said she had never witnessed such a violent incident in her years of service. The officer expressed her dismay at what had happened and added that it could not be confirmed or ruled out at the moment that it was a terrorist attack. Investigations are ongoing to clarify the motives of the attacker and better understand the details of the incident.
