Brazil: Jair Bolsonaro charged with coup plot
Former president faces up to 40 years in prison for trying to prevent Lula’s return after 2022 elections
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been formally charged with orchestrating a coup plot to prevent the return to power of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, winner of the 2022 elections. Prosecutors indicted Bolsonaro and 33 other suspects, accused of planning and promoting acts contrary to the rule of law and the three democratic powers.
The indictment, handed over to the Supreme Court, covers crimes of “attempted coup,” “violent abolition of the democratic rule of law,” and “armed criminal organization.” If found guilty, Bolsonaro could face a sentence ranging from 12 to 40 years in prison. According to magistrates, Bolsonaro, along with his former vice presidential candidate Walter Braga Netto and other allies, allegedly orchestrated a plan to block the 2022 election outcome by trying to maintain power through illegal actions.
