Australia, 17-year-old girl killed by shark near shore in Queensland

The girl was swimming 100 metres from Woorim beach when she was attacked. It is the second fatal incident in 2025

A sudden and fatal attack. A 17-year-old girl died in Australia after being attacked by a shark while swimming in the waters of Woorim Beach, a beach located on Bribie Island, north of Brisbane. The attack occurred about 100 metres from the shore, in an area popular with surfers, who had previously taken measures to reduce the risk of shark encounters.

According to reports from the Queensland Ambulance Service, paramedics responded to a ‘serious shark bite incident’, but despite rescue attempts, the injuries sustained by the young woman, particularly to her upper body, proved too severe. The police confirmed the death shortly afterwards.

Shark attacks in Australia
This is the second fatal attack since the beginning of the year in Australian waters. The first was on 2 January, when surfer Lance Appleby was killed by a shark off the coast of South Australia. In the Brisbane area, however, such an event has not occurred since 2006, when Sarah Whiley, 21, died after being attacked while swimming with friends.

Although the Australian Government emphasises that shark attacks in Queensland are rare and that most species do not pose a danger to humans, incidents such as this one demonstrate how the risk, albeit low, is always present in Australian waters.
