National Electoral Council announces date, while oppositions wait for 2023 presidential results to be respected
The Venezuelan authorities have made the date of the next parliamentary and regional elections official, setting it for 27 April. The announcement was made by the president of the National Electoral Council (Cne), Elvis Amoroso, during a press conference. However, the political climate remains tense: the oppositions have already declared that they will not participate in the 2025 consultations, unless the government in Caracas recognises and respects the results of the presidential elections on 28 July.
On that occasion, the opposition parties claimed victory for conservative candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, but the Venezuelan authorities proclaimed Nicolas Maduro’s re-election without making public the election records that could have confirmed the results. This lack of transparency fuelled further controversy and protests, calling into question the legitimacy of the democratic process in the country.
