TikTok, Trump considers 90-day extension to avoid US ban
President-elect considers a reprieve for ByteDance, the Chinese parent company
US President-elect Donald Trump stated that he would ‘most likely’ grant a 90-day extension to TikTok to avoid a ban in the US. In an interview with Nbc News, Trump explained that the decision will be made after his inauguration, scheduled for Monday 20 January. The extension would give the Chinese parent company, ByteDance, additional time to find a non-Chinese buyer.
The statement comes on the eve of the imposed deadline to divest the platform and the day after the Supreme Court upheld the ban law, rejecting TikTok’s freedom of expression appeal. Trump emphasised the importance of the issue, anticipating that the final announcement could come on Monday.
