Russia responds to Trump: ‘Arctic is in our strategic interests’
Moscow responds to Trump’s intention to gain control of Greenland and Canada, reaffirming its presence in the Arctic
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated the strategic importance of the Arctic for Russia, stating that ‘the Arctic is a region that falls within our strategic and national interests. We are and will remain present in the Arctic territory’. The statement comes in response to the recent words of US President-elect Donald Trump, who again expressed interest in controlling Greenland and Canada.
Peskov also emphasised that Russia is interested in maintaining peace and stability in the Arctic and is open to cooperating with all countries to ensure a secure environment in the region.
Meanwhile, Trump renewed his stance on Greenland, calling control of the island crucial to US national security. The president did not rule out the use of military force or economic coercion to gain control of the territory, an idea he had already proposed during his first term.
