Quad-Demic alert in the US: mask requirement reintroduced in 8 states
The simultaneous spread of influenza, Covid, RSV and norovirus worries the American health system
The Quad-Demic alert has been triggered in the US, an emergency situation due to the simultaneous circulation of four different viruses: influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Covid-19 and norovirus. This situation led eight US states to reintroduce compulsory face masks in an attempt to limit the spread of infections.
Speaking on the issue, Italian virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco explained to Adnkronos Salute that the co-presence of multiple viruses is nothing new for Italy, where similar situations have already occurred in the past, although the focus was mainly on influenza. ‘The US did well to reinstate the mask requirement,’ Pregliasco said, pointing out that in the UK similar measures had already been taken in hospitals after the increase in flu cases.
As for Italy, Pregliasco expressed his support for the use of face masks in contexts such as hospitals, RSAs and crowded places, especially to protect the most fragile people, although he ruled out the need for a national obligation.
