Beijing calls the hypothesis ‘extremely unlikely’ and accuses the US of exploiting the issue
International tensions continue over the origin of the Covid-19 pandemic. China firmly rejects the hypothesis that the virus ‘escaped’ from a laboratory in Wuhan, calling it ‘extremely unlikely’. According to Mao Ning, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the conclusions reached by Chinese and World Health Organisation (WHO) experts during their field investigations would confirm the improbability of this theory.
Beijing’s statement comes after the CIA assessed with ‘low confidence’ that a research-related origin may be more likely than a natural one. China has accused the US of politicising the issue and called on Washington to share its data on early suspected cases with the WHO.
This controversy further fuels the international debate on the responsibility and accuracy of investigations into the pandemic that has rocked the world since 2020.
