Wildfires ravage Los Angeles County, marking another chapter of climate disasters in California
California, already hit by torrential rains in 2024, is now ravaged by untamed wildfires in Los Angeles County. After one of the hottest summers on record and a rainless autumn, the fires are destroying entire neighbourhoods, highlighting how the state has become ground zero of climate change disasters.
Less than a year ago, the southern part of California was flooded, but now the situation is the opposite: drought and fires dominate the scene. According to Daniel Swain, climatologist at the University of California, vegetation that grew during the winter rains has become perfect bait for fires. The addition of strong Santa Ana winds further fuelled the flames, leading to an unmanageable situation for firefighters.
So-called ‘meteorological whiplashes’, i.e. the sudden change from torrential rain to periods of extreme drought, are increasingly frequent and devastating. These climate changes, linked to fossil fuel pollution, make California particularly vulnerable. Governor Gavin Newsom stated that, with global warming, there is no longer a fire season: ‘It’s year-round.
