WHO calls on Israel to stop raids on Gaza hospitals

WHO director Tedros Ghebreyesus condemns attacks on Gaza health facilities and calls for a ceasefire to ensure medical care

World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called on Israel to immediately stop military raids on Gaza hospitals, which have become frequent and targeted in recent days. The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) stated that many of the Gaza Strip’s hospital facilities are used by Hamas for military purposes, but the WHO insists on the need to protect the health system and ensure access to care for the civilian population.

‘Gaza’s hospitals are back to being battlefields, and the health system is under serious threat,’ Ghebreyesus wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). ‘We repeat: stop the attacks on hospitals. The people of Gaza need access to healthcare and aid workers must be able to provide care safely. An immediate ceasefire is needed!’

The statements come after the Israeli army conducted a raid against the Al Wafa hospital in Gaza City, suspected of housing Hamas members. More than 240 Palestinians were arrested during the military operations, including medical staff at Kamal Adwan hospital, including director Hussam Abu Safiya.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, the IDF also arrested four patients overnight, one of them in critical condition, who were being transferred from the Indonesian hospital in the north of the Strip to the Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City. The Indonesian hospital is no longer operational and lacks medical equipment and supplies, forcing staff to move patients to facilities in Gaza City.

Meanwhile, Hezam al-Asad, a Houthi official and Iranian supporter, threatened Israel with a message in Hebrew on X, stating that ‘as long as children in Gaza are killed every day, the Zionists will not be allowed to sleep’. In recent days, Houthi rebels have stepped up attacks against Israel, and al-Asad has published several provocative messages in response to the situation.
