US flight cancellations due to winter storm disrupt travel nationwide

More than 12,000 flights grounded across the United States as snow, ice and Arctic air sweep the country

US flight cancellations due to winter storm have surpassed 12,000 as airlines scramble to respond to a massive snow and ice system impacting large portions of the country over the weekend. According to FlightAware data cited by CBS News, more than 3,700 flights were canceled on Saturday, with over 8,200 additional cancellations scheduled for Sunday. It is the highest single-day total of flight cancellations since the COVID-19 travel collapse of March 2020.

Several major airports have been severely affected. All Saturday flights at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City were canceled, along with all flights scheduled for Sunday morning. Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport, Nashville International Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport were among the hardest hit hubs as airlines halted operations amid dangerous weather conditions.

In response to the escalating situation, President Donald Trump approved emergency declarations for Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana and West Virginia. “We are working closely with FEMA, governors and state emergency management teams to ensure everyone’s safety,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, urging residents to stay warm and remain cautious.

The National Weather Service described the storm as “unusually widespread and long-lasting,” driven by a powerful Arctic air mass moving south from Canada. In Dallas, temperatures dropped to minus 6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, with freezing rain expected to worsen conditions.

The storm has also triggered widespread power outages. According to poweroutage.us, about 57,000 homes and businesses in Texas and more than 43,000 in Louisiana were without electricity late Saturday. Additional outages were reported across Minnesota, California, Arkansas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Mississippi and the US Virgin Islands.

As US flight cancellations due to winter storm continue to ripple through the transportation system, airlines warn that delays and disruptions could persist until weather conditions stabilize and airport operations fully resume.
