Musk apologises to Trump: “Some posts went too far”

After tensions over the public spending bill, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX takes a step back and tones down the confrontation

Elon Musk backtracks after days of heated controversy with US President Donald Trump. In a post on social media, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX admitted that he had gone too far with his criticism of the White House: ‘I regret some of the posts, they went too far,’ he wrote.

The clash erupted following the approval of the new public spending bill, a key measure for Trump’s second administration. Musk had launched a frontal attack on the legislative package, calling it ‘a disgusting abomination’ and calling for a political reaction against the Republicans who had supported it.

The proposal, renamed the Big Beautiful Bill, aims to revive strategic sectors of the US economy. Musk’s dissent took on increasingly harsh tones, culminating in a post, later deleted, in which the tycoon compared Trump to the controversial Epstein files.

Musk had played a leading role in the administrative machine until the end of May, as head of the DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), from which he resigned in an apparently relaxed press conference. But in the days that followed, the confrontation with Trump quickly degenerated into an exchange of accusations and provocations.

The president initially reacted by calling Musk “crazy” and “poor guy”, but then toned down his rhetoric, wishing him “all the best for the future”. Now, Musk’s words open up a glimmer of hope for a possible détente.

The mea culpa of the founder of X marks a moment of truce after weeks of public friction, which involved not only domestic politics but also the dynamics between technology and power.
