Pope Francis discharged from Gemelli after 38 days: new appeal for peace

After almost 40 days of hospitalisation, the Pope has returned to the Casa Santa Marta, launching a new appeal for an end to conflicts, with a focus on the Gaza Strip and Ukraine

Pope Francis left the Gemelli polyclinic today, Sunday 23 March, where he had been hospitalised for 38 days. On board a Fiat 500, the Pontiff was driven slowly towards Casa Santa Marta, briefly greeting those present with a gesture from the vehicle window. Despite obvious fatigue, he uttered a simple ‘Thank you to everyone’ before getting into the car.

In the morning, many people gathered at the Gemelli to give their greetings to the Pope. Shortly after midday, Bergoglio appeared from the small balcony of the facility, visibly in a wheelchair and wearing his white robe. Doctors confirmed that the Pope is no longer suffering from bilateral pneumonia, but that traces of infection remain that still need time to heal. The discharge was described as ‘protected’ by the doctors who attended to him.

Before leaving the hospital, Pope Francis made an appeal through the Angelus, again only in written form. The Pontiff expressed his grief at the recent Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, where numerous civilians were killed and wounded. He called for an immediate end to the fighting and the resumption of dialogue for the release of hostages and a lasting ceasefire. He described the situation in the Strip as ‘very serious’ and called for an urgent commitment from the parties to the conflict and the international community.

Pope Francis also spoke of his experience while in hospital, emphasising the patience he had learned to cultivate, inspired by God’s love, and thanked all those who had prayed for him. Concluding his message, he renewed the call to prayer for peace, invoking an end to wars, with particular attention to countries such as Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
