Ukrainians in Russian-occupied territories must decide by 10 September whether to accept Russian citizenship or leave their land, according to a new decree signed by Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin has decided to increase the pressure on Ukrainians living in Russian-occupied territories and other areas under Russian control. By 10 September, Ukrainian residents will have to choose between accepting Russian citizenship or leaving the country. This is the directive contained in a decree recently signed by the Russian president, according to the latest British intelligence report released by the Ministry of Defence in London.

The decree for the ‘Russification’ of occupied territories

Putin’s decree requires Ukrainian citizens residing in the occupied territories to adjust their legal status, forcing them to obtain Russian citizenship or leave the region. According to the British intelligence report, shared on Platform X, this measure appears to be part of a broader plan to force those who do not accept Russian citizenship to leave the occupied Ukrainian territories.

A forced ‘Russification’ project

Analysts point out that this policy is part of the Kremlin’s long-standing efforts to ‘Russify’ the illegally occupied territories by progressively eliminating Ukrainian culture, identity and statehood. This act is seen as a further step in Putin’s strategy to consolidate Russian control in occupied areas, forcing Ukrainians to comply or emigrate.
