New York Times/Siena survey finds majority of Americans reject Trump’s decision on Iran and signal worsening approval across economy, immigration, and cost of living

A new nationwide survey delivers a significant political setback for Donald Trump, with a clear majority of Americans rejecting his decision to strike Iran and overall approval ratings sliding further into negative territory.

According to a New York Times/Siena poll, 64% of voters say Trump was wrong to decide to attack Iran, while only a minority support the move. The same survey places his overall approval at 37%, compared with 59% who disapprove of his performance in office, marking what the poll describes as a new low point in his public standing.

The data also show widening dissatisfaction across key policy areas. On economic management, disapproval rises to 64%, while concern over the cost of living climbs even higher, reaching 69%. The survey links these perceptions in part to the broader consequences of the Iran conflict, including rising fuel prices and their impact on consumer goods.

Immigration policy—long a central pillar of Trump’s domestic agenda, particularly his campaign of mass deportations—also records negative sentiment. The president is disapproved by 56% of respondents on immigration, with 41% expressing support.

The political implications appear particularly significant ahead of the midterm elections, where voter backlash against an unpopular administration has historically played a decisive role. The poll indicates that 44% of voters believe they are personally harmed by current administration policies, up nearly 10 percentage points compared to the previous autumn, when the figure stood at 36%.

Among independent voters, the trend is even more pronounced. Disapproval of Trump reaches 69% in this group, while 47% say they are personally affected by his policies.

Despite the criticism directed at the White House, the survey also highlights broader dissatisfaction within the political system. Only 26% of respondents say they are satisfied with the direction of the Democratic Party, while 44% of Democratic voters express discontent with their party’s current line. Within the Republican base, 23% voice similar criticism of the GOP.
