The move blocks party registrations, including opposition leader María Corina Machado’s Vente Venezuela, amid a tense political climate

The Venezuela Electoral Council suspends registration of new political parties, halting the authorization and formalization of new political movements across the country. The decision comes amid an already tense political environment and contrasts with the apparent tolerance for dissent recently signaled by the interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez.

The measure was formalized through Resolution No. 260128‑004, approved on January 28 with signatures from the Electoral Council president, Elvis Amoroso, and the Secretary General, Antonio José Meneses Rodríguez. According to the council, the suspension is intended to “organize and rationalize” administrative procedures for the creation and recognition of political parties, though the resolution does not specify a timeline for the suspension.

The decision directly affects the opposition party Vente Venezuela, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado. The party had already been blocked from formal registration ahead of recent presidential and legislative elections, and if the suspension continues, the same barrier will remain in place for 2026.

Critics argue the measure is far more than a routine administrative pause. Alí Daniels, coordinator of the NGO Acceso a la Justicia, said it resembles a “state of emergency decision” rather than a simple bureaucratic procedure, with potential consequences for Venezuela’s democratic process.

The Venezuela Electoral Council suspends registration of new political parties at a time when the CNE has previously exercised extensive control over political formations, complicating party registrations and participation for some opposition groups. The outcome and duration of the suspension will remain under scrutiny in the coming months, particularly as the 2026 electoral cycle approaches.

By blocking the creation of new parties, the Venezuela Electoral Council suspends registration of new political parties, raising concerns about the limits of political pluralism and the balance of democratic governance in the country.
