The face-to-face meeting between the two leaders will take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, a historic Cold War military base

Donald Trump has chosen Alaska as the venue for the mid-August summit with Vladimir Putin, hosting the Russian president at one of the most important military bases in the Arctic state. The face-to-face meeting between the two leaders will take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, which played a crucial role in American defence during the Cold War, as the Library of Congress recalls.

The base was created in 2010 through the integration of Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson Army Base, becoming the largest in Alaska with over 32,000 people, equivalent to about 10% of Anchorage’s population. Of these, about 6,000 are military personnel, and the base is home to the headquarters of the United States Alaskan Command. Among the units assigned to the base is the F22 Raptor, a fighter jet considered by the Air Force to be one of a kind.

This is not the first time that Elmendorf-Richardson has hosted high-level meetings. In 1971, Richard Nixon welcomed Emperor Hirohito, while Barack Obama and Joe Biden visited the base in 2015 and 2023, respectively. Trump also visited several times during his first term.

The choice of this base is not only symbolic but also strategic: it guarantees security and optimal logistics for the summit, offering a controlled military environment in which to discuss sensitive international political issues.
