Putin and Trump in Anchorage: was the face-to-face meeting really useful?
Three-hour summit in Alaska: brief statements, relaxed atmosphere but no details on commitments made for Ukraine
“It was a very productive summit, we’re almost there.” With these words, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump greeted the press at the end of their three-hour meeting in Anchorage, Alaska. No questions were allowed from reporters, no clarification on the results achieved regarding the war in Ukraine: a few statements and then they were gone, with no working lunch or meetings with the extended delegations.
The Kremlin’s words – Putin spoke first, which was unusual according to protocol. He called the agreement reached “a starting point” for addressing the Ukrainian crisis and emphasized the possibility of resuming pragmatic relations with Washington. The Russian leader thanked Trump for the “friendly and confident” tone of the talks, adding that the American president “has clear ideas about what he wants to achieve.”
The Kremlin chief reiterated that Ukraine’s security must be guaranteed, while noting that the conflict represents a deep wound for Moscow. Putin expressed hope that Kiev and European capitals would constructively address the first steps that emerged from the summit.
Trump’s position -The US president’s statement was more concise, describing the meeting as “very productive” and acknowledging the existence of “many points of agreement,” although “some more relevant than others.” He specified that “there is no agreement until there is an agreement,” announcing contacts with NATO and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to illustrate the results of the talks.
The closing of the summit – At the end of the joint conference, Putin surprised Trump by inviting him in English to a future round of negotiations in Moscow. “That’s interesting,” replied the American president, “I would get some criticism. But it could happen.” After the meeting, the two leaders left Alaska: Putin returned to Moscow after a visit to the Fort Richardson military cemetery, while Trump returned to Washington on Air Force One.
