Tehran in flight: Israel warns civilians, chaos and traffic jams in the capital
Traffic jams leaving the city and communication difficulties after the IDF warning. Flooding in the north complicates evacuation
Tehran is in chaos. Long lines of cars are leaving the Iranian capital today, Sunday 15 June, after the Israeli army (IDF) issued a warning to civilians about the risk of possible attacks on military sites and institutions of the Islamic Republic.
Images released by the AFP agency show rows of vehicles leaving along the main roads in the western part of the city, while NBC News reports communication problems and reports of closed roads and congested traffic.
Further complicating the situation is the explosion of a pipe in the Tajrish Square area, north of the capital: the flooding has isolated entire neighbourhoods and made many journeys impossible, just as thousands of residents are trying to flee to safety.
IDF spokesman Colonel Avichay Adraee posted a message in Persian on X addressed to the civilian population: “Anyone near weapons production facilities or buildings linked to the regime is in danger. Leave the area immediately and do not return until further notice”.
This is an unprecedented warning, confirming the military escalation between Israel and Iran following Operation Rising Lion and the killing of the head of intelligence for the Revolutionary Guards. Tel Aviv’s words clearly indicate the possibility of new targeted operations, with an increase in raids on strategic Iranian targets.
Tension remains high and the capital appears increasingly empty, while fears of a large-scale conflict grow.
