Attack on platform 13/14 of the Hauptbahnhof, Germany’s busiest railway station. Police rule out involvement of others
New knife attack in Germany. At Hamburg central station today, Friday 23 May, at least twelve people were injured, six of them in serious condition, after an attack on platform 13/14 while passengers were waiting for a train.
According to Bild, the perpetrator of the attack was a woman, who had already been arrested by the federal police, who confirmed the action in a post on X. ‘She acted alone,’ a spokesman quoted by the NDR broadcaster clarified, ruling out further active threats in the area at the moment.
Some of the injured were rescued directly on board the trains, while others were transported to hospital. The Red Cross intervened with several emergency units. Immediately all train traffic was suspended and the entire station was closed to allow rescue operations and investigations.
The motive for the attack remains unknown at the moment, Der Spiegel reported, but the police are not ruling out any leads. The mental state of the attacker is also being investigated.
Hamburg’s Hauptbahnhof is the busiest station in Germany, with a daily flow of more than 500,000 people. Since 2023, for security reasons, it has been forbidden to carry knives and weapons inside, but this was not enough to prevent today’s tragedy.
