H5N1 bird flu, first human case in Mexico: a three-year-old girl is seriously ill
The little girl is hospitalised in the state of Durango. Experts reassure: the risk of transmission between humans remains low, but care is needed to prevent adaptation of the virus to humans
Mexico has recorded the first human case of H5N1 bird flu, an event that immediately attracted the attention of international health authorities. A three-year-old girl, resident in the northern state of Durango, is infected and is currently hospitalised in serious condition, according to the Mexican Ministry of Health.
In an official note, the ministry specified that ‘there is no evidence of sustained person-to-person transmission’ and that the risk for the general population remains low, as also indicated by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
