US president warns Brussels and Ottawa about possible trade sanctions. EU prepares response, concern over cars and global market
Donald Trump has threatened the European Union and Canada with additional tariffs if they coordinate in response to US protectionist measures. In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that if the EU cooperates with Canada to harm the US, ‘much larger tariffs than currently planned’ will be imposed on both countries.
Meanwhile, in Brussels, Teresa Ribera, Vice-President of the European Commission, described the US decision to introduce a 25% tariff on all cars as ‘very negative’, stressing the importance of finding an appropriate response that protects European interests and maintains a fair market. Ribera also pointed out that the Commission will work with the industry to manage the situation without jeopardising the industry.
The German automotive sector is particularly concerned about the impact of the duties, with the Automotive Industry Association (VDA) warning of serious economic consequences for companies and consumers. As of 2 April, the 25 per cent duty will affect cars not produced in the US, also affecting US manufacturers with models made abroad.
