A car plowed into pedestrians at high speed along the Planken shopping street in downtown Mannheim, Germany, killing at least 2 people and injuring 25 others, 15 of them seriously. The intensive care unit of Mannheim University Hospital has declared a state of disaster alert, ready to handle the large number of injured, many of them in serious condition. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser canceled her trip to Cologne, where she was scheduled to attend carnival celebrations, to travel to Mannheim and follow the situation closely.

“Saving lives, taking care of the injured and starting investigations immediately are now top priorities,” Faeser said through her spokesman.
