The US president intensifies his propaganda against Zelensky, parading unverifiable polls and having the media sponsor new candidates ready to replace him (and who would have more support without any objective data), undermining confidence in the current Ukrainian government. What will Europe do? Watch out for Germany going to the polls
President Donald Trump is orchestrating a media campaign that has all the air of deliberate disinformation against Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, an operation that not only undermines the credibility of the current Ukrainian government, but also risks destabilising the political situation in a country already devastated by war. Using unclear surveys and numbers that are not supported by real data, in a country in the midst of war, which has other heavy problems, polls are being churned out in these hours on possible Ukrainian presidential candidates who have more support than Zelensky: the narrative that Trump and his zealous collaborators are spreading hypothesises the need for a change of leadership, casting shadows on the figure of Zelensky… And by extension on Europe.
This media operation, supported by a pro-Trump press, not only raises hypothetical candidates as possible replacements for Zelensky, but also exploits the mechanisms of information based on uncontrolled data, with perhaps abundantly sweetened bits of truth, to get across the idea that the current Ukrainian president is no longer trusted in the country. The reality, however, paints a very different picture: Zelensky remains one of the pillars of the Ukrainian resistance, supported by the population that recognises his commitment in a difficult war context and considered a hero even among European leaders for the resistance he has shown.
Trump’s strategy is not new: the use of propaganda and vague information without obvious evidence as tools to shift attention and generate chaos in sensitive political scenarios is one of the most obvious features of his foreign policy. In this case, the goal is not only to discredit Zelensky, but also to create a favourable terrain for a possible change of power in Ukraine, aligned with the geopolitical and mere business interests of the American administration; a condition that would also facilitate the Russian administration, which is eager to eliminate, since it has failed physically, the main firm opponent to its expansionist aims.
The risk that this campaign could further destabilise Ukraine is real, especially at a time when the country needs stability and international support to cope with Russian aggression. In all this, Europe, which has been scrambling to help him up to this point, is essentially silent and in the moves it makes, it is moving in total disunity, which can hardly be considered a real Union, trying to avoid creating friction, as Vance put it, with the new star and striped ‘Sheriff’ with superhuman powers. How long can it hold out under these conditions and with friendly fire against Volodymyr?
Germany votes on Sunday, with the far-right being defended by the Trump/Musk administration, which could make an exploit… Will the Germans end up like the Americans did in November?
