Trump’s words about Zelensky raise critical reactions from some leaders in Europe, who defend the Ukrainian president as a democratically elected leader

Donald Trump’s recent remarks against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have provoked harsh international reactions, with some European leaders expressing concern. Trump called Zelensky ‘a dictator without elections’, triggering a wave of criticism, particularly from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

‘Trump’s claims about Zelensky are false and dangerous. Zelensky is the democratically elected president of Ukraine,’ Scholz said in an interview with Der Spiegel, emphasising the importance of maintaining international support for the Ukrainian leadership in the difficult context of the war.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed his full support for Zelensky during a telephone conversation. A Downing Street spokesperson reported that Starmer reiterated Zelensky’s legitimacy as a democratically elected leader and defended the decision to suspend wartime elections, comparing the Ukrainian situation to that of the UK during World War II, when elections were suspended.

Trump’s statements, which continue to shake the international political landscape, highlight the emerging rifts between the US and its main European allies on the issue of conflict management in Ukraine. Italy is currently silent on this delicate argument.
