Negotiations in Doha proceed, with significant progress in hostage talks and prospects for a ceasefire

As part of an agreement under discussion between Israel and Hamas, currently underway in Doha, over 3,000 Palestinian prisoners would be released. These would include 200 lifers, as well as minors, women and the sick. Confirming this possibility was Qadura Fares, head of the Palestinian Commission on Detainees, speaking to the Maan agency. This first phase would be a significant step in alleviating tension and advancing a peace process between the two sides.

Preparations for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza

Meanwhile, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have initiated plans for a rapid withdrawal of troops from certain areas of the Gaza Strip to coincide with progress in negotiations. Among the options examined by the Israeli army is the Netzarim corridor, which divides Gaza in two. Despite the numerous military infrastructures built in the area, the IDF has assured that it is able to withdraw its soldiers quickly if necessary, confirming its readiness to respect any agreement reached by the government.

Optimism for a possible agreement with the new US government

For the first time in months, signs of optimism for a resolution of the conflict are emerging. With Donald Trump’s imminent inauguration into the White House, set for 20 January, the chances of an agreement between Israel and Hamas seem to be growing. Trump’s statements, which clearly called for a solution to the conflict before the start of his term, are increasing the pressure on both sides, with outgoing President Joe Biden actively involved. This coordination between the two US administrations seems to be a key element in unblocking the situation.

Hostage release and ceasefire

The agreement envisages a two-stage release of hostages. In the first stage, ‘humanitarian’ hostages, mainly women and elderly or sick people, will be released. The release will be accompanied by a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from parts of Gaza. At this stage, negotiations will continue for the release of the remaining hostages, including soldiers and young people, as well as for the return of the bodies. However, there are fears that some bodies may not be located, as reported by Palestinian sources.

US commitment to a comprehensive peace agreement

In addition to the ongoing negotiations, the Trump administration is aiming for a comprehensive agreement to end the war in Gaza. Although the details of the second phase are still under discussion, the US is pushing for both sides to fully implement the agreement, in the hope of reaching a long-term truce. Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is actively involved in the negotiations in Doha, and recently met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, further raising hopes for a solution.

Israel’s position in the negotiations

Israel seems more willing than ever to reach an agreement. Netanyahu sent a negotiating team composed of senior Mossad and Shin Bet officials to Doha, giving them more leeway than in previous negotiations. This change could mark a turning point in the talks, giving a real chance for an end to the long war.

Death toll in Gaza

Meanwhile, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry has updated the death toll of the conflict. In the last 24 hours, 28 people were killed, bringing the total death toll to 46,565. At least 109,660 people have been injured in more than 15 months of war between Israel and Hamas.
