Disagreement between the United States and France over the Israeli offensive: Trump supports Netanyahu, Macron calls for an end to raids on non-military targets

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his support for Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel’s war against Iran. ‘I told him: go ahead. I talk to him every day, he’s a good person, he’s doing a lot,’ Trump said, calling the Israeli prime minister ‘a war president’ and criticising the internal pressure Netanyahu is under, probably in reference to his legal proceedings.

Macron: ‘Immediate truce, too many non-nuclear targets’
Meanwhile, the Élysée Palace has called for restraint. At the end of a meeting of the Defence and National Security Council, French President Emmanuel Macron asked Israel to stop raids on targets in Iran that are not directly linked to the nuclear or missile programme.
‘The growing escalation and the number of civilian casualties in both Iran and Israel are a cause for deep concern,’ the official statement said. ‘It is urgent to put an end to these military operations, which pose a serious threat to regional security.’

Netanyahu thanks Trump and defends the offensive
The Israeli prime minister welcomed Washington’s support: “I would like to thank President Trump, a great friend of the State of Israel. We are in constant contact, and last night we had a very cordial conversation,” he said.
As for the indirect reference to Macron, Netanyahu reiterated the aims of the operation: ‘We launched this offensive to remove the nuclear threat and the threat posed by ballistic missiles. We are targeting nuclear facilities, command centres, missiles and symbols of the regime.’
