Ukraine, Rubio: ‘Crucial week for negotiations. We will decide whether to continue”
After Trump-Zelensky summit in Rome, pressure grows on diplomatic developments. Zelensky denounces new Russian assaults
A decisive week opens for the future of the negotiations on Ukraine. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with Nbc News, emphasising that it will have to be assessed “whether we want to continue to engage” or whether it is time to focus efforts on other priorities. Rubio’s words come in the aftermath of the meeting in Rome between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, and after the US president’s accusations against Vladimir Putin of not really wanting negotiations.
“We cannot continue to devote time and resources without concrete progress,” Rubio reiterated, pointing out that “the only possible solution is a negotiated agreement” in which both sides will have to accept compromises. “We just want this war to end,” he added, “Everyone should hope that President Trump will succeed in ending this conflict.
For his part, Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of continuing military operations despite opening statements, speaking on X of “attempts to deceive the world”. According to the Ukrainian president, Moscow’s army has intensified its assaults since the Easter period, while Kiev forces continue defensive operations in the Russian regions of Kursk and Belgorod, disputing the Russian announcement on the complete “liberation” of the area.
The Kremlin also commented: spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that ‘many elements of Trump’s vision coincide with Russia’s’, a reassurance that came after the US president’s outburst over Moscow’s contradictory behaviour in the negotiations.
