Canadian PM announces resignation, Chrystia Freeland and Anita Anand vying for Liberal Party leadership

Justin Trudeau today announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party and as Prime Minister of Canada, a decision that has sparked debate over his succession. Among the leading candidates to take his place are two prominent women: Chrystia Freeland and Anita Anand.

Chrystia Freeland, former deputy premier and finance minister, is seen as one of the favourites. The 56-year-old, originally from Alberta with Ukrainian roots, has held key roles in the Trudeau government since 2015. Her departure from the government in December, motivated by disagreements with Trudeau over how to deal with the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump, further weakened the premier’s position and hastened his resignation. Freeland also played a central role in the negotiations for the new Nafta agreement with the US and Mexico.

Anita Anand, current Minister of Transport and former Minister of Defence, is another prominent figure in the leadership race. The 57-year-old lawyer, who entered politics in 2019, spearheaded Canada’s efforts to provide military aid to Ukraine after the Russian invasion, raising her political profile internationally.

A third possible candidate is Mark Carney, former president of Canada’s central bank and UN special envoy for climate action. Trudeau has tried to include him in his government team, but Carney may find it difficult to attract support because of his climate positions, which are strongly criticised by the Conservatives.

As the Liberal party prepares to choose a new leader, polls show Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservatives, widely in the lead.
