Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth calls 800 senior officers without explaining the reasons. Speculation and tension grow
Washington, 25 September 2025 – Secret summit in Quantico. Hundreds of US generals and admirals, including those stationed abroad, have been summoned to Quantico, Virginia, next Tuesday for a meeting described as “top secret”. The decision, announced by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, is accompanied by no indication of the agenda and is fuelling a wave of speculation and fear among military leaders.
According to the Washington Post, the call concerns all officers with the rank of brigadier general or equivalent in the Navy: about 800 men and women who normally supervise thousands of military personnel. An anonymous source told CNN that ‘it’s being talked about as if it were the Squid Game of generals,’ referring to the Korean series known for its elimination trials.
Secret summit: hypotheses and concerns
The lack of official details about the secret summit has led to speculation ranging from a major physical test to a maxi-briefing on the state of the Department of Defence, to more extreme hypotheses such as mass dismissals. “You don’t summon generals to an auditorium without telling them what’s on the agenda. It’s all very strange, people are worried,” a military source told the American newspaper.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed only that Hegseth will speak to officers ‘early next week,’ without adding further details.
Cuts and reforms underway
The meeting comes as Hegseth, a former military officer and television presenter, pursues a reform plan that includes reducing the number of generals and admirals by at least 20%. Several senior figures have already been removed since the start of Donald Trump’s second term, including former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General CQ Brown and Admirals Lisa Franchetti and Linda Fagan.
President Trump has also signed an executive order adding the name “Department of War” to the name “Department of Defence”, a move that has sparked controversy in Washington.
Criticism of the military leadership
Before taking over the Pentagon, Hegseth accused a third of senior officers of “complicity in the politicisation of the military”, arguing that many “play by the wrong rules to follow Washington ideologues”.
